Special Edition: "At the Crossroads of Europe"
March 25–27, 2025, CHAMBER HALL, Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław
The 17th International Conference "Traditions of Silesian Musical Culture" took place from March 25–27, 2025. This year's edition, titled "At the Crossroads of Europe," was an event of particular international significance, coinciding with the Polish Presidency of the European Union. The conference is organized by the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.
Silesia is a region with a remarkable history, providing a meeting place for diverse cultures and traditions. Its rich musical heritage combines centuries-old traditions with modern trends in contemporary art. The conference brought together researchers and artists from Poland and Europe, creating a platform for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and inspiration. Speakers included, among others, Thomas Ertelt, Tomasz Jeż, Gesine Schröder, and Remigiusz Pośpiech. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Hab. Artur Błażejewski, archaeologist and Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Wrocław.
Accompanying Concerts
Two exceptional concerts were an integral part of the event. The first was a piano recital by Charlotte Steppes, a German pianist of the younger generation, which took place on March 25, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Concert Hall of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.
The second event, the New Music Concert, took place on March 26, 2025, at 7:00 PM. The concert was dedicated to the works of composers associated with the Department of New Media and the Computer Composition Studio. The audience heard compositions by renowned artists such as Cezary Duchnowski and Marcin Rupociński. This concert highlighted the dynamic development of contemporary music in Silesia and its global dimension.
Significance of the event
The long-standing goal of the conference has been the international promotion of the unique musical heritage of Silesia and the importance of Wrocław as one of the key centers of musical culture in Europe. The event will provide an opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and inspiration between scholars, artists, and the public. The event will culminate in a scholarly publication summarizing the achievements of the participants, to be published in 2026.
