PhD Paweł Miczka
baroque violin
Born in Katowice into a family with musical traditions – both parents were oboists of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. After completing his primary education in Poland, he studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig in the class of Prof. Roland Baldini. Under his influence, he developed an interest in historical performance practice and went on to study baroque violin with Prof. Susanne Scholz. While in Leipzig, he also discovered his passion for teaching, completing pedagogical studies and working at a music school in Halle.
After finishing his studies in Germany, he furthered his education at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague – Europe’s largest early music department – in the class of Prof. Enrico Gatti. In 2020, he earned his doctoral degree in musical arts, with a dissertation supervised by Dr. Arkadiusz Kubica on Viennese classical chamber music in the context of historical performance practices. Since 2021, he has been affiliated with the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.
Improvisation plays a significant role in his artistic activity. His interest in this area led to the founding of the ensemble Mitomani, together with students from The Hague Conservatoire. With the group, he won awards at the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam and the Polish Radio Festival Nowa Tradycja.
He has studied with distinguished musicians including Franz Brüggen, Barthold Kuijken, Christophe Coin, Erich Höbarth, Midori Goto, Clive Brown, Ryo Terakado, Kati Debretzeni, Walter Reiter, Bart van Oort, and Frank de Bruine. He has collaborated with ensembles such as Collegium 1704, Musica Florea, Solamente Naturali, Silva Rerum Arte, BachPlus, and Hof Musici. As concertmaster, he has led groups including Lautten Compagney Berlin, Capella Jenensis, Märkisch Barock, Altberg Ensemble, Concerto Foscari, the Early Music Ensemble of the Lublin Philharmonic, Michaelis Consort, and Aris & Aulis Berlin.
He has published articles in journals such as Ruch Muzyczny and Meakultura. He is president of the Konsek Kultury Foundation, promoting musical culture, and director of the music venue Scena za szybą in Katowice. He owns three violins: an anonymous Italian baroque instrument from the 18th century, a classical violin by Józef Świrek (1977), and a modern instrument by Franco Simeoni (2010).
