dr hab. Michał Moc
ear training with harmony
Composer, accordionist – teacher and... traveller. He graduated with honours in composition (under the supervision of Prof. Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil) from the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, where he obtained his doctorate in 2008 and his habilitation in 2019. His creative output includes over 50 performed compositions, including chamber, vocal, vocal-instrumental and orchestral works, with a particular preference for the accordion as a solo instrument. A separate group consists of miniatures written for music school students, including compulsory pieces for instrumental and choral competitions, pieces introducing selected topics, often accompanied by methodological commentary. In 2007, he was included in a four-year programme for the promotion of young composers by the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music.
He lectures at his alma mater while conducting research in the field of musical ear training; he is the author of computer programmes and educational games, and the originator of the National Ear Training Competition for secondary music school students and the mYear Festival of Musical Imagination. He was a consultant teacher and regular lecturer at CENSA (Centre for the Education of Teachers of Artistic Schools). He conducts methodological courses, open lessons, as well as presentations and workshops for teachers on topics such as the practical application of theoretical principles in music education, instrumentation for school chamber ensembles, and modern methods of ear training and musical imagination.
He has won numerous awards in composition competitions: national competitions – on the occasion of the Eucharistic Congress (Opole 1997, two second prizes for Mszę Ludu polskiego and Wierzę w Ciebie), the A. Didur Competition in Sanok (1998, distinction), the 1st Composition and Instrumentation Competition in Wrocław (1998, 1st prize), Musica Sacra in Częstochowa (1999, 2nd prize for Alleluja), A. Panufnik in Krakow (2000, 1st place for Betelgeuse) and international competitions – R. Murray Schaffer in Poznań (1999, distinction for Exchange), Franz Josef Reinl-Stiftung in Vienna/Munich (2001, 3rd prize for Furietta for chamber orchestra). He has also received scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (several times), ZAiKS, the City Council of Wrocław, the Kiwanis Wratislavia Club on behalf of Mercedes Benz Polska – Mirosław Wróbel, the Leopold Kronenberg Banking Foundation and a research scholarship named after Prof. Maria Klementyna Tomaszewska. He is also a concert accordionist and winner of many competitions: the National Accordion Competition in Chełm (1994 and 1996, 1st place), Zgierz (1995, 1st place), Mława (1995, 1st place), International Accordion Music Festivals in Przemyśl (1999, 1st place and distinction), in Sanok (2000, 3rd place), 4th Contemporary Music Competition for Young Performers (PTWM, Warsaw-Radziejowice, 2001).
He has recorded for Polish Radio and Television and for record labels. In 2011, the DUX label released his monographic album of compositions, Emotion. As he often emphasises, he does not recognise music without emotion.
