She graduated from the Academy of Music in Wrocław in the solo singing class of Prof. Agata Młynarska-Klonowska. She made her debut in 2013 in the title role of Dvořák's Rusalka during a concert performance of this opera at the Lower Silesian Philharmonic. A year later, she began her collaboration with the Wrocław Opera in the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello. Her repertoire also includes the role of Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, the title role in Moniuszko's Halka, Micaëla in Bizet's Carmen, Zemfira in Rachmaninoff's Aleko, Amelia in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, Ortlinde in Wagner's Die Walküre, and Roxana in Szymanowski's King Roger.
She is a laureate of international and national competitions, including the 9th Stanisław Moniuszko International Vocal Competition in Warsaw (2016, 3rd place and special prize), the 49th Antonín Dvořák International Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary (2014, third place and special prize), the 6th Halina Halska-Fijałkowska International Vocal Competition in Wrocław (2013, Grand Prix and special prize), 2nd Jan, Edward and Józefina Reszków Vocal Competition in Częstochowa (2011, 2nd place and three special prizes), 10th National Vocal Competition in Duszniki-Zdrój (2010, 1st place). The singer was a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Mayor of Wrocław.
The artist participates in international music festivals, including in Duszniki-Zdrój, Bydgoszcz, Kudowa-Zdrój, Krakow, Wrocław, Bielsko-Biała, Košice, and the Saaremaa Opera Festival (Estonia). She can also be heard at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, Wrocław Opera, Grand Theatre in Łódź, Grand Theatre - National Opera, the philharmonics of: Lower Silesian, Kalisz, Koszalin, Lublin, National, Pomeranian, Poznań, Sudeten, Silesian and Koszice, as well as at the National Forum of Music.
Joanna Zawartko has collaborated with conductors such as Adam Banaszak, Jakub Chrenowicz, Marzena Diakun, Seokwon Hong, Jacek Kaspszyk, Tadeusz Kozłowski, Ewa Michnik, Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski, Marek Pijarowski, Wojciech Rodek, Zygmunt Rychert, Jerzy Salwarowski, Robertas Šervenikas, Ruben Silva, Daniele Squeo, Piotr Sułkowski, Jan Ślęk, Johannes Willig, and Tadeusz Wojciechowski.
She is the winner of the 2018 Koryfeusz Muzyki Polskiej (Coryphaeus of Polish Music) award in the Discovery of the Year category. In 2019, she received the honorary badge of Merit to Polish Culture.
