The Academic Baroque Orchestra was established in 2003, when the Interdepartmental Early Music Studio began its activities. The orchestra currently operates at the Department of Organ, Harpsichord and Early Music, enabling students to perform in ensembles and as soloists. The ensemble's directors were: Andrzej Kosendiak, Associate Professor (2003-2005), Zbigniew Pilch, MA (2005-2007), and Jarosław Thiel, MA (2007-2013). Since 2013, the orchestra has been led by Bartosz Kokosza, MA.

The orchestra consists of students from various classes of the Department of Organ, Harpsichord and Early Music. The ensemble also invites young musicians from other specialisations to collaborate – students interested in knowledge and experience in the field of historical performance practices. The concert programmes include compositions by both the great masters of early music and lesser-known, and sometimes forgotten, composers of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Among the most important concerts in the history of the Academic Baroque Orchestra are performances at: the 13th May with Early Music Festival (2004); the 40th Wratislavia Cantans International Festival (2005); and the Harpsichord Music Days (2006). In November 2014, the ensemble participated in a pioneering nationwide project, which involved combining the Baroque Orchestras of the Music Academies of Poznań, Łódź and Wrocław, thus creating the Intercollegiate Baroque Orchestra.
