Big Band AMKL
The Big Band of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław was founded on the initiative of Prof. Aleksander Mazur, who was the musical director and conductor of the orchestra until June 2015.
From the very beginning, the band's main goal was to draw on the best traditions of American big bands and strive for proven orchestral models: rich sound and inventive solo improvisations. This idea has always been reflected in the repertoire presented at the home university and at numerous occasional concerts throughout Poland by successive generations of students.
The band's rich history includes participation in numerous jazz festivals, including Jazz nad Odrą in Wrocław, Hot Jazz Spring in Częstochowa and the Big Band Festival in Nowy Tomyśl. The orchestra has performed many times at philharmonic halls in various Polish cities and has often graced the celebrations of the Wrocław academic community.
Among the soloists invited to perform with the band are such outstanding musicians as Achille Succi, Kornel Fekete-Kovács, Maciej Sikała, Piotr Baron, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Piotr Wojtasik, Grzegorz Nagórski, Andrzej Jagodziński, Adam Makowicz and Kajetan Galas.
Since October 2015, Bartosz Pernal, a jazz trombonist, composer, arranger, and teacher at the Academy of Music in Wrocław, has been the artistic director of the academic big band. In recent years, the orchestra has continued its mission of carrying out important artistic projects with the participation of students from the Academy of Music in Wrocław. A significant number of concerts, including performances at the headquarters of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, recitals preceding concerts by The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra & Wynton Marsalis at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, and participation in the International Big Band Competition in Hoofddorp, are examples of the big band's activity on prestigious music stages. The band's rich history also includes special events of educational value, such as workshops conducted for the orchestra by Wynton Marsalis, Bob Mintzer and Kenny Rampton. A unique showcase of the band is the DVD Big Band of The Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław – Live, released in 2016 and recorded during a concert at the NOSPR.
