Academic Symphony Orchestra
Academic Symphony Orchestra
The Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław
The ensemble consists of first- and second-cycle students, and working in the orchestra – alongside individual instrument lessons – is one of the most important areas of education for young instrumentalists. The Instrumental Department provides substantive and organisational support for the ensemble, entrusting the management of the orchestra to conductors who are employees of the Wrocław Academy of Music. Since the ensemble's inception, the orchestra has been managed by: doc. Marek Tracz, prof. Stanisław Lech, prof. dr hab. Mieczysław Gawroński, Dr Wojciech Rodek, Prof. Alan Urbanek. Since the 2022/2023 academic year, the ensemble has been led by Dr Bassem Akiki. The orchestra's concerts are conducted not only by conductors associated with the Wrocław academy, but also by guest conductors invited from various Polish and foreign centres. Among the outstanding conductors collaborating with the ensemble are Gabriel Chmura, Jacek Kaspszyk, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Kurt Masur, Marek Pijarowski and Tadeusz Strugała.
Every year, the Academic Symphony Orchestra carries out several large projects, presenting great vocal-instrumental and instrumental works on various music stages in Wrocław.
Since 2002, the orchestra has been cooperating with the University of Wrocław, performing during university ceremonies and the most important events of the Wrocław academic community, such as the Science Festival. The orchestra also graces with its performances the ceremonies of awarding honorary doctorates at Wrocław universities and music festivals. In addition to Wrocław artists, often associated with the Academy of Music, guest artists have also performed with the orchestra, including Józef Frakstein, Wiesław Ochman, Jadwiga Rappé, Krzysztof Szmyt, Stefania Toczyska, Adam Makowicz and Philippe Giusiano.
The Academic Symphony Orchestra is not only the largest musical ensemble at the university, but also its flagship. The ensemble is gaining an ever-growing audience, and its wide-ranging artistic activity is becoming increasingly important in the musical life of Wrocław.
