“For me, timbre is not only an aesthetic quality but also carries semantic meaning. A natural point of reference can be found in spoken language. Voice modulation shapes the nonverbal message — it expresses the speaker’s intention, attitude, and emotional state; the tone of voice may even alter the meaning of the spoken words. Spectral analysis of speech sounds makes it possible to detect changes and identify spectral parameters characteristic of particular emotions. This phenomenon, functioning almost as a form of onomatopoeia, can be applied to music creation: timbre can serve as a sign that represents nonverbal content. I intend to use this concept in my project — composing a set of madrigals for vocal ensemble and early-music instruments.”
