
Prof. Dr hab. Krystian Kiełb (2008-2016)
Composer, music theoretician, academic teacher. Graduate of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław in composition (class of Prof. Zygmunt Herembeszta) and music theory. He graduated with honours in both specialisations. During his studies he received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and Art for two years. In addition, he completed postgraduate studies in the management of educational and cultural institutions.
Professionally, he is affiliated with the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław. In 1998, he completed the then first degree qualification, in 2005 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Arts, and in 2014 the title of Professor of Musical Arts. He is a laureate of awards, distinctions and state distinctions. His compositional output has been the subject of scholarly discussion and analysis.
Composer
Krystian Kiełb's compositional output includes dozens of works classified in various genres and forms of instrumental, vocal and vocal-instrumental music. His compositions have been premiered and given numerous performances at home and abroad, including Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, France, Sweden and the USA. Krystian Kiełb's compositions have been performed at music festivals, interpretation courses and performance competitions, among others, also as obligatory items, and have entered the programme of artistic institutions.
Academic teacher
At the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, Krystian Kiełb teaches a composition class as well as doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree seminars in composition and music theory; over the course of twenty-four years of teaching, he has lectured on such subjects as: special composition, general composition, counterpoint, fugue, special harmony, tonal harmony, harmony teaching methodology, piano improvisation, analysis of a musical work. In addition, he has been the supervisor and reviewer of a number of theses, including master's degrees in composition, music theory, art education, music therapy and in the management of educational and cultural institutions. By 2016, 23 graduates had completed Bachelor's and Master's Degree or Single Master's Degree studies under Krystian Kiełb's guidance (composition - 7, music theory - 15, artistic education in the musical arts - 1), and Postgraduate Studies in Management of Educational and Cultural Facilities - 61. During the same period, he was the supervisor of 5 and reviewer of 3 doctoral dissertations, reviewer of 7 postdoctoral proceedings, served as chairman and member of postdoctoral committees and reviewer in proceedings for the award of an honorary doctorate.
Research and popularisation activities
In addition to his artistic and teaching activities, he is active in research and popularisation. He is the author of scientific, popular science and journalistic texts. He has given a number of papers, communiqués, lectures and talks at conferences, symposia, scientific sessions, interpretation courses and popular science events. Krystian Kiełb's research interests include issues of music theory, philosophy of music, contemporary compositional techniques. He also takes up interdisciplinary issues.
Organisational and animation activity
An important place in Krystian Kiełb's activity is occupied by organisational and animation activity. In 2008-2016, he held the post of rector of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, and in 1999-2005 he served as vice-chancellor of the Academy. Since 2017, he has headed the Department of Composition at the Wrocław Academy of Music. In 2020, he was again entrusted with the dignity of rector of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.
In addition, in 2005-2006 he directed the work of the Department of the History of Silesian Musical Culture, in 1998-2008 he directed the activities of the Academy of Music in Wrocław for the Lower Silesian Festival of Science, and in 2000-2008 he was a member of the Festival's Programme Council. In 2002-2008, he headed the Postgraduate Studies in Management of Educational and Cultural Institutions at his alma mater. In 2000, he was appointed to the group of Experts of the Minister of National Education. In 2005-2008, he actively participated in the activities for the implementation of the Bologna Process in higher education, with a particular focus on higher artistic education. This activity culminated in his appointment by the Minister of Science and Higher Education as a member of the Bologna Experts Team. Member of a number of collegiate bodies, including: Accreditation Commission for Universities of Arts (2002-2012, including 2009-2012 chairman of AKUA), College of Vice-Chancellors of Higher Education Institutions of Wrocław and Opole (1999-2008), Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (2008-2016, including from 2012 a member of the commission for education of the CRASP), College of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions of Wrocław and Opole (1999-2008). The Board of the Lower Silesian Alumni Promotion Office of Wrocław Higher Education Institutions (2000-2005), as well as competition committees, editorial teams.
Between 2009 and 2015, he sat on the Monitoring Committee of the Regional Operational Programme for the Lower Silesian Voivodship 2007-2013, as a representative of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. In 2013 appointed to the network of ambassadors promoting women's participation. Since 2015 member of the Council for Artistic Education of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and since 2016 member of the Music Professions Team. From 2017 to 2019, an expert of the Polish Accreditation Commission, and from 2019 to 2020, a member of the Council for Scientific Excellence of the first term and the first Academic Council of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław. In 2020, Their Magnificences Rectors of Art Schools operating in our country entrusted him with the function of Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Art Schools. He has been repeatedly invited as a juror of various music competitions.
