Director of the Composition Institute

Composer and teacher. Even before beginning his studies, in March 2009, he made his debut as a composer on the stage of the then Witold Lutosławski Philharmonic in Wrocław (today the NFM) with his piece Contrafluctum for symphony orchestra, and two months later he won the Opole 2009 National Composers' Competition.

In 2014, he graduated from the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław in the composition class of Prof. Krystian Kiełb, Dr. Hab. (with honours and the Primus Inter Pares Honorary Diploma) and in the violin class of Prof. Jarosław Pietrzak, Dr. Hab. and Małgorzata Kogut-Ślandy. He supplemented his education with composition courses in Rēzekne (Latvia), Apeldoorn (Netherlands), Radziejowice and Krakow. In 2016, he obtained a Doctor of Arts degree, and in 2022, a Doctor Habilitated in Arts in the field of musical arts.

His compositional output includes over 100 independent works for various ensembles (with an emphasis on instrumental and electroacoustic music), as well as music for theatre performances, music for therapy, audiovisual forms, arrangements of popular and film music, and jingles. In his creative work, he eagerly undertakes interdisciplinary activities, seeking connections between music and other disciplines. He has collaborated with STOLGRAF and PayEye on research and development projects.

His compositions have been performed over 300 times at concerts and festivals in most European countries, in the USA (including Boston and New York) and Australia (including the Sydney Opera House) by such ensembles as the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, NOSPR, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, the New Music Orchestra, the Contemporary Ensemble Music Cooperative, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Duo van Vliet, the Cracow Golden Quintet, Trio Flow Unit, Hard Rain Soloists Ensemble, Hashtag Ensemble, Kwadrofonik, Orkest de Ereprijs, Sepia Ensemble, Sound Factory Orchestra, Nordlys Ensemble and many others. Several of his compositions have been recorded on CDs, published in print and broadcast by Polish and foreign radio stations. In 2019, his monographic album First Command was released by DUX.

Adam Porębski is a laureate of several international and national composition competitions (including the Krzysztof Penderecki International Composition Competition ‘ARBORETUM’ in Radom, the International Competition ‘GENERACE’ in Ostrava, the Witold Szalonek Silesian Composers' Tribune in Katowice, the Grzegorz Fitelberg Composition Competition in Katowice, and the Tadeusz Ochlewski Composition Competition in Krakow).

He is a multiple scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the Minister of Science and Higher Education and the Mayor of Wrocław. He is a laureate of the Student Nobel Competition and the Young Poland Scholarship. He was awarded the Bronze Cross of Merit (2023) and the Honorary Badge ‘Meritorious for Polish Culture’ (2020). He is an ordinary member of the Polish Composers' Union (and since 2015 Treasurer of the Wrocław Branch), a member of the Polish Society for Contemporary Music and the Academy of Young Scholars and Artists.

The composer is also involved in teaching, research and popularisation activities. He has actively participated in over 20 international and national conferences and scientific sessions, delivering papers on topics such as his own compositional work, issues of ear training methodology, composition teaching and musical performance. He has collaborated with, among others, the Lower Silesian Science Festival, the Children's University and the Lower Silesian Teacher Training Centre. Since 2016, he has been collaborating with the Karol Szymanowski State Music School of the 1st and 2nd degrees in Wrocław, and since 2023 with the Ryszard Bukowski State Music School of the 2nd degree in Wrocław. At his alma mater, he teaches composition, harmony and ear training. In the 2020-24 term, he served as vice-dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Music Therapy, and in the 2024-2028 term he serves as director of the Institute of Composition.
