Director of the Doctoral School, Head of the Pedagogical Studies Department – He is a music theorist, researcher, lecturer, teacher and organiser. He graduated with honours in music theory (1999, supervisor: Prof. Andrzej Tuchowski, Dr Hab.) and composition (2000) in the class of Prof. Zygmunt Herembeszty at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław. He obtained his PhD in humanities (art studies – musicology) at the University of Wrocław in 2008 and his postdoctoral degree in art (composition and music theory) in 2019. He is also a graduate of postgraduate studies in film, computer and multimedia music at the K. and G. Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź (2012). Tomasz Kienik's professional career began with a position as a lecturer at the Institute of Music (formerly the Institute of Musical Culture) at the University of Zielona Góra (2000), later as an assistant, assistant professor and deputy director of the Institute (2012-2014). In 2012, he was employed at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, successively as a lecturer, senior lecturer, assistant professor and professor (since 2024). In addition to his work in higher music education, until 2024 he was also involved in secondary music education, initially at the F. Liszt State Music School of the 1st and 2nd degrees in Głogów (2000-2008), and later at the K. Szymanowski State Secondary Music School in Wrocław (since 2008), where he was head of the theory department from 2010 to 2024. At the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, he currently serves as Director of the Doctoral School (since 2024) and Head of the Pedagogical Studies (since 2023). He is a member of the Council for Musical Arts (since 2020), the Council of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Music Therapy (terms of office 2020-2024 and 2024-2028), and chairman of the Faculty Election Committee of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Music Therapy (terms of office 2020-2024 and 2024-2028). He was a member of the Team for the Evaluation of Quality and Artistic and Scientific Activity of the Academy of Music in Łódź (term of office 2020-2024), a member of the Team for the report for the Polish Accreditation Committee (2019), coordinator of Student Internships at the Faculty of Music and Art Studies (2012-2023) and coordinator of SIN/POLON. He is an active member of the Department of Music Theory and History of Silesian Music Culture and a collaborator of the Department of Ear Training and Musical Imagination and the Department of Church Music. He was the initiator, organiser and director of the scientific conference Spirituality in Music – Music in Spirituality, which took place at the Academy of Music in Wrocław on 23-24 April 2024. Tomasz Kienik's main area of activity is the continuous development of music theory, including analytical reflection on 19th-21st century music, the history of music of this period, systematics and pragmatics in the field of music analysis methods, the historical development of music theory and harmony, religious and church music, spirituality in music, academic teaching methodology and didactics in secondary art education. As a researcher, he has participated in numerous academic conferences (Canterbury, Lucca, Brno, Manchester, Guildford (Surrey), Hanover, Wrocław, Poznań, Warsaw, Szczecin, Kraków, Łódź, Gdańsk, Konin and others), and has published a number of scientific articles, including on Polish contemporary music of the 20th and 21st centuries in journals related to music theory, musicology and the humanities. His achievements include two monographs: Sonorystyka Kazimierza Serockiego (Sonoristics of Kazimierz Serocki, 2016) and Magnificat – od biblijnego tekstu do polskiej kompozycji muzycznej XX i XXI wieku (Magnificat – from the biblical text to Polish musical composition of the 20th and 21st centuries, 2019).

The completed research is being continued with further studies on the setting of other biblical texts to music, as well as on the psychological and historical aspects of the creation and analysis of musical works. Tomasz Kienik promotes modern teaching methods (including the use of multimedia) by conducting courses and workshops at the invitation of the Centre for Artistic Education and other educational institutions. In addition to music theory, his compositional output includes autonomous, illustrative and functional music; he is also a laureate of the Tadeusz Baird (Warsaw) and Andrzej Panufnik (Krakow) composition competitions (in the 1990s).

At the Academy of Music in Łódź, he teaches courses in methods of music analysis in the 20th and 21st centuries, history of music theory, introduction to music theory, history of music in the 18th-21st centuries, ear training with orchestral scores, methods of teaching harmony and principles of music, and modern teaching methods. He is also the supervisor of numerous bachelor's and master's theses in music theory, one doctoral thesis (in progress - Martyna Krymska-Renk, MA) and a mentor to students performing at national and international academic conferences.

He has received the following awards: Silver Medal for Long Service (President of the Republic of Poland, 2022), the honorary badge ‘Distinguished for Polish Culture’ for his overall scientific, pedagogical and artistic activity (Minister of Culture and National Heritage, 2018) and the 1st degree Individual Award of the Rector of the University of Zielona Góra for organisational achievements (2014).
