The Chair of Music Theory and History of Silesian Musical Culture was established in 2010. It replaced the previously existing (since 1996) Chair of History of Silesian Musical Culture, whose work was directed by Prof. Maria Zduniak, an outstanding music theorist, pianist, art historian and educator.
The Chair is a research unit operating within the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Music Therapy. Its research focuses on three areas: Silesian musical culture, the university's patron Karol Lipiński, and music theory with a particular emphasis on the analysis of musical works. The individual research work of the Chair's members and organised scientific conferences, such as Traditions of Silesian Music Culture, Karol Lipiński. Life, Activity, Era and Analysis of Musical Works. History-theoria-praxis, as well as sessions devoted to Wrocław musicians. These are cyclical events of international and national scope. An important part of the Chair's activities is the scientific supervision of students' research projects.
The Chair of Music Theory and History of Silesian Music Culture organises not only academic conferences and accompanying events (concerts, exhibitions), but also book promotions, lectures and workshops, to which eminent theorists, musicologists and composers are invited. To date, we have hosted Mieczysław Tomaszewski, Michał Bristiger, Eero Tarasti and Marta Ptaszyńska. As part of the Music Studies and Interpretations series, the latest books by Polish and foreign music researchers are presented.
An important part of the Chair's activities is editorial work related to publications containing post-conference materials. These include books published as part of series such as Traditions of Silesian Musical Culture, Analysis of Musical Works: History-Theory-Praxis, Karol Lipiński. Life, Activity, Era, Musicians of Wrocław, as well as non-serial publications, such as: In Tribute to Aleksander Tansman (1897-1986). The Chair of Music Theory and History of Silesian Musical Culture is developing dynamically.
The wide range of activities undertaken is noteworthy. We cooperate with various academic centres and institutions in Poland and abroad. We undertake tasks of an interdisciplinary nature.
