Foreign Languages Centre
Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław
The Foreign Languages Centre of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław is an interdepartmental unit within the university’s structure. This means that it provides language instruction for students of all faculties — at the first-cycle (Bachelor’s), second-cycle (Master’s), and Doctoral School levels.
Language classes (lektoraty) are an integral part of the official study programmes; therefore, attendance is compulsory.
The primary objective of the language courses is to develop, consolidate, and expand the students’ linguistic competence, both in general language use and in specialized terminology related to music.
The Centre is headed by Senior Lecturer Katarzyna Kamola-Łukasik.

Levels of Instruction
Language courses are organized in groups according to four levels of proficiency:
A1/A2 (Italian), B1, B2, and C1 (English and German), in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
At the first-cycle level, the language course concludes at a minimum level of B2; at the second-cycle level, at a minimum level of B2+.
Course Requirements by Faculty
At the first-cycle level, students of the Faculties of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Music Therapy; Instrumental Studies; Music Education, Choral Conducting and Church Music; and Jazz and Popular Music are required to complete one language course of their choice, lasting four semesters.
Students of the Faculty of Vocal Studies are required to complete a six-semester course in Italian and a four-semester course in English or German.
Additionally, students may choose an elective course in Italian or German.
At the second-cycle level, students of all faculties listed above must complete one language course of their choice, lasting two semesters. Each language course concludes with a final examination.
Once selected, the language course cannot be changed after the first, second, or third semester.
At the Doctoral School, language instruction is offered exclusively at the C1 level, and the course concludes with a final examination.
Additional Activities and Professional Development
Language instructors also provide individual language consultations for students and academic staff. They serve as examiners on committees conducting foreign language proficiency examinations within doctoral proceedings.
The lecturers continuously improve their qualifications and strive to ensure that their classes are substantive, engaging, and tailored to students’ expectations, equipping them with the skills necessary for effective professional communication in international contexts.
Modern information and communication technologies (ICT) are systematically integrated into the teaching process.
The Foreign Languages Centre is also implementing tutoring methodologies, based on competencies acquired by one of the lecturers during a study visit to University College London (UCL) as part of the “Masters of Didactics” project financed by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science.
